The Geographic Information Science & Technology (GIST) group at Oak Ridge National Laboratory is seeking a qualified candidate in the field of geographic information science with particular emphasis on spatial demography. The GIST group is an internationally renowned R&D organization with a wide range of expertise ranging from GIS and remote sensing
technologies to key domain sciences and focuses on developing innovative, knowledge discovery, solutions to solve multidisciplinary and complex problems for energy, environment, and national and homeland security missions. The function of this position is to establish and pursue a vigorous research program within the field of geographic information science, with
special emphasis in geographic data and computational sciences with applications aligned with urban dynamics, individual behavior and health. The ideal candidate will be able to leverage the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility (OLCF), the Urban Dynamics Institute, and the Climate Change Science Institute to foster interdisciplinary scientific and technical advancements.

Major Duties/Responsibilities
This position will promote geographic information science through very active research initiatives in emerging geospatial sciences domains. The candidate will provide scientific leadership and vision in developing and sustaining a research program in geographic data sciences with highlighting spatial demography and its applications in urban dynamics, energy
and transportation, and public health. Typical research programs will include geographic data analysis, remote sensing, photogrammetry, simulation modeling, visualization, and application development. In addition to conceptualizing, designing, and developing new applications, the position will lead teams of interdisciplinary scientists and engineers. This position will interact and coordinate with national and international agencies, experts, and professional organizations to attract new research and development opportunities and keep ORNL on the forefront of the geospatial sciences.

Additional responsibilities include:
• Participate in the development of new research directions in GIScience in collaboration with activities of the Urban Dynamics Institute, the Climate Change Science Institute, and the Health Data Science Institutes at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
• Work with an interdisciplinary team of researchers to develop large-scale urban models of micro and macro behaviors. 
• Ensure dissemination of research outcomes through publications in high profile professional journals and presentations to the scientific community.

Qualifications Required
• Ph.D. in natural sciences, geography, computer science or computer engineering, electrical engineering, along with five ormore years of experience (beyond Ph.D.) in areas such as geographic information science, remote sensing, geographic information systems, spatial modeling, statistics, or visualization.
• Significant experience and expertise in computing for design and use of GIS and imaging systems, GIS and remote sensing theory techniques and application, computational methods and spatial algorithms, data management, visualization, and geospatial modeling.
• Excellent communication, strategic planning, organization, leadership, and decision-making skills. An excellent record of publications and professional activities is important. Strong interpersonal skills and working effectively as a team member are essential.
