Tennessee Awarded USGS Grant

​The Department of Finance and Administration, OIR - GIS Services has been awarded a $670,000 grant to support geospatial data development in Tennessee.   Through the US Geological Survey (USGS) and their 3D Elevation Program (3DEP), LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) data will be collected in 27 counties primarily along the Cumberland Plateau region of the State.   Additional collaborative funding to support this $2.7 million dollar project is coming from the Tennessee Department of Transportation, Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, the Tennessee Valley Authority, Department of Energy, Department of Agriculture, Hamilton County, and OIR. The 3D lidar data will be used to support a wide range of geospatial functions including: floodplain mapping, transportation planning, environmental assessment, stormwater management, forestry, agriculture, and economic development.   Through this project, the Tennessee Base Mapping Program, managed by OIR - GIS Services is continuing its rich history of developing large scale geospatial data in Tennessee.   To learn more about GIS in Tennessee you can visit us at and
