GIS Lab Manager coordinates and supervises the Department of Geography’s GIS/Remote Sensing/Geospatial teaching and research laboratories and carry out other duties critical to maintaining and managing the unit’s computer technological infrastructure (including hardware, software, and network ports). The position has been identified as a critical need in the unit given the ongoing expansion and enhancement of the GIS (Geographic Information Science) program, curriculum, and facilities.

Primary Responsibilities:
With respect to the management of GIS/Remote Sensing/Geospatial labs, the position is responsible for:
• providing technical assistance and support to faculty & students; 
• coordinating lab schedule & provide work direction to student workers; 
• providing technical consultation to course instructors; 
• installing and maintaining computers, peripherals, and software upgrades; 
• managing allocation of lab security codes to students & faculty; 
• coordinating with GIS graduate teaching assistants in staffing computer labs; 
• coordinating with OIT personnel in installing software on lab computers;
• evaluating the condition & effectiveness of existing technology for purpose of replacement; 
• Consulting on decisions about the retirement & surplus of computers and other technology related to GIS labs.
With respect to the management of general computer infrastructure and technology needs, the position is responsible for:
• coordinating and managing annual University Tech Fee proposal/submission; 
• managing computer software licensing, contractual agreements/purchases;
• managing inventory for computer/remote sensing equipment in labs & research facilities; 
• assessing Internet port usage & manage network;
• providing computer and software support to faculty (for departmental computers);
• providing technical assistance to faculty & students in printing posters/large prints;
• managing and maintaining SMART board products and LCD projectors in department;
• providing technical assistance to faculty & instructors in using SMART board products;
• manage and maintain computers in the department’s Claxton offices;
• inventorying existing technology and identifying technology needs; 
• researching new technologies for possible adoption ;
• performing analysis, consultation, and problem solving in collaboration with but also independent of OIT (Office of Information Technology) support.

Qualifications Required Qualifications and Skills:

• A bachelor degree in computer science/engineering, geography (with GIS focus), or related fields is required. 
• At least one year in similar position(s).
• Thorough knowledge of general computer hardware (e.g., workstation, server) and software, familiar with Microsoft product, GIS and remote sensing software.
• Geospatial database management skills and discipline-specific experience necessary for installing, configuring, updating, and trouble-shooting software platforms related to GIS, Remote Sensing, Spatial Analysis, Geo-visualization, Transportation and Environmental Modelling. 
• Ability to make informed recommendations on technology upgrades, new adoptions, purchases, and surplus. 
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills with ability to write articulate and exact documentation.
• Ability to work as part of a team and collaborate with faculty, students, staff, and OIT. 
• Capable of training and supervising student workers in lab setting.
• Organizational skills necessary for constructing schedules, inventorying equipment, and prioritizing work requests.

Desired Qualifications and Skills:
• Master degree and/or with computer-related educational and software certificates.
• Three years in similar position(s).
• Demonstrated experience and success in coordinating GIS/Remote Sensing/Geospatial labs, particularly in university setting.
• Demonstrated experience and success in maintaining, evaluating, and trouble-shooting the performance of computer hardware, software, and Internet ports
• Familiarity with the computer research and teaching needs of faculty, particularly in Geography.
